In November 2000, Lester Embree participated in three conferences:
(1) V. Congreso de Fenomenologia in Sevilla, Spain, where there were some forty-eight presentations. He had not learned how close he needs to be to photograph speakers well, but the audiences listened keenly and there was a remarkable number of mid-career women phenomenologists, as well as considerable interest in new areas, such as non-human animals, and a good spirit among colleagues.
(2) "The Future of Phenomenology / 100 Years of Phenomenological Inquiry" at Olomouc, Czech Republic. There were thirty papers from almost as many countries. The ceremonies were impressive, and, most wonderfully, the unveiling of the plaque of Edmund Husserl on the city hall of Prostejov, were he was born, was witnessed by all. There is a great deal of phenomenology in Eastern Europe.
(3) "Time, Space, and Culture," which was organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and CARP, had twenty papers from eight countries, went very well, and we also toured Hong Kong.
On this trip, Embree also visited the Leuven Husserl Archive, University College Dublin, having a Guiness where James Joyce drank, and the Schutz Archive at Waseda University in Tokyo, which is guarded by this samurai. Phenomenology is doing quite well. Husserl sleeps well as the old millenium ends and the one one begins.
The Center is pleased to announce the addition of Prof. Burt Hopkins to its Directorate.
